Mets Owner has clear message after Bo Bichette, Freddy Peralta moves
New York Mets owner Steve Cohen addressed the fanbase on Wednesday night after news of the Freddy Peralta trade broke, celebrating the franchise’s recent moves.
On Wednesday, the Mets flexed their financial muscles, finalizing a $ 126 million, three-year deal with star free agent Bo Bichette, while striking a blockbuster trade for Milwaukee Brewers ace Freddy Peralta.
Hours after the deal broke, Cohen took to social media and shared a simple yet timely message.
“What an incredible week. Let’s go Mets!,” the team’s owner wrote.
Bichette and Peralta are both elite players who possess the talent and production to back it up.
However, the Mets addressed their outfield need on Tuesday with a trade for an uber-talented outfielder in Luis Robert Jr., who has completely underwhelmed since his breakout 2023 season, though he is still in his physical prime and could tap back into his potential.
Robert will earn $20 million for the 2026 season. It is a gamble for the Mets considering his lackluster production – putting together back-to-back seasons of 1.4 bWAR — but the team can afford it given its payroll flexibility.
Why did the Mets take so long to make additions?
Cohen has put his money where his mouth is as an owner, investing millions into the roster since becoming the owner and bringing in highly regarded executives.
This winter, Mets fans grew concerned after the team let fan favorites leave via free agency or trade, without immediately replacing them.
Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz signed with other teams amid the MLB Winter Meetings, while fan favorites Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil departed the franchise as well.
The Mets only managed to add two relievers amid this talent drain, bringing in Devin Williams and Luke Weaver from the Yankees via free agency.
New York took a patient approach, letting the first wave of moves unfold, and positioned itself for the second wave. The Mets were in the running for Kyle Tucker, being one of the finalists before he signed with the Dodgers.
Since Tucker’s decisions, the Mets went after Bichette, swung the trade for Robert, and doubled back for Peralta.
It will likely take a while before the real story about the team’s approach comes to light, but at the end of the day, New York has overhauled their roster in a notable fashion, leaving fans much happier than they were a week ago.
