EU chief: Release of hostages a ‘moment of relief for entire world’

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has described the release of the final hostages held by Hamas in Gaza as a “moment of relief for the entire world.”

“It means that a page can be turned. A new chapter can begin,” she wrote on X.

She also reaffirmed EU support for the US-brokered peace plan, saying that when it is finalized it could be a “historical milestone.”

The EU is ready to contribute “all tools at our disposal” to ensure its success.

Specifically, von der Leyen said the EU would support the Palestinian Authority with reforms and efforts to improve governance. She added that the EU would play an active role within the donor group for Palestine and provide funds for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip.
