German court: Yezidi family deported to Iraq must not be repatriated
A Yezidi family deported to Iraq has no possibility of returning to Germany following a court decision.
In summary proceedings, the Potsdam Administrative Court on Thursday refused to oblige Germany to repatriate the family. The decision is final, a court spokesman announced.
The family, which includes four children and had been living in the north-eastern town of Lychen for several years, had been deported on July 22 while an urgent appeal was being considered.
The Potsdam Administrative Court had lifted the obligation to leave the country immediately pending further proceedings, but it was too late as the family was already on the plane.
The administrative court last week denied a lawsuit filed by the family against the rejection of their asylum application.
The Yezidis are a religious minority who faced mass atrocities by the Islamic State terror group. In 2023, the German parliament recognized crimes committed by the Islamist militia as genocide.
