Michigan to interview high-profile NFL coach for HC job: report

With it looking more and more like Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer being a pipe-dream hire for the Michigan Wolverines, new candidates are reportedly popping up as the school continues its search for a new permanent head coach after firing Sherrone Moore.

The school has already interviewed interim head coach Biff Poggi multiple times, and it’s been linked to other top college coaches like Missouri’s Eli Drinkwitz, Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham, Washington’s Jedd Fisch, and former Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham.

There’s also been speculation the Wolverines showed interest in Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Tommy Rees and Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter.

In the last few days, however, Louisville’s Jeff Brohm has emerged as the frontrunner for the job according to multiple reports. But on Wednesday it was reported by John Brice of FootballScoop that there’s another NFL coach that Michigan not only has interest in but it also plans to interview as well.

“Multiple sources, at both the collegiate and NFL levels, shared with FootballScoop Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday night that Michigan had begun vetting current Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken and intended to speak this week with Monken,” Brice reported.

“… Both Monken and Brohm have emerged this week as central figures in a Michigan search that school officials, as FootballScoop has twice reported, told players and their family members that they would like to have wrapped up by Christmas.”

Monken has served as the Ravens offensive coordinator for the last three seasons.

Baltimore ranks 18th in total offense this season, which can be attributed to quarterback Lamar Jackson’s injury woes. However, in both seasons Monken had a healthy Jackson, the Ravens ranked first and sixth in total offense, and third and fourth in scoring offense.

There’s been reports “major changes” will be made with the Ravens in the offseason with many speculating one or more of Monken, Jackson, and head coach John Harbaugh could be gone next season.

If Monken is coaching elsewhere next season, he will likely be highly sought after by multiple teams.
