A manager at a Wendy's in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, lost her job after a video surfaced showing a neurodivergent employee tied to kitchen equipment. The clip has reopened a police case that was closed almost as soon as it started, and it has left a lot of people asking who this manager is and why the case is getting a second look now.
Police identified the manager as Michiko Burton. She told officers she tied the worker up as part of a TikTok trend and meant it as a joke, not as punishment or cruelty. The employee told police at the time that he wasn't hurt and wasn't upset by what happened, so no charges were filed. That should have been the end of it, but it wasn't.
Who Is Michiko Burton?
Burton worked as a manager at the Wendy's location on South Church Street in Murfreesboro. Outside of this incident, there isn't much public information about her no details about her age, background, or work history before this job. Almost everything known about her comes directly from the police report and from a co-worker who recorded what happened. That co-worker, Nicholus Murphy, filmed the employee with trash bags wrapped around his leg, tying him to a grill. Murphy says Burton told him she didn't have time to "babysit" the employee and wanted him to stay put while she handled other things in the restaurant. Burton later gave police a different reason, saying it was a joke tied to a TikTok trend. Murphy says he never saw any such trend and doesn't buy her explanation.
What the Video Actually Showed
The video came from Murphy, who says he got worried after seeing the employee restrained in the kitchen. Wendy's has kept the employee's identity private, and he hasn't been named publicly. Murphy passed the footage along to his supervisors instead of keeping it to himself, which is how it eventually got in front of franchise management.
That led to a meeting with restaurant staff and management. An area manager told employees during that meeting that what happened was unacceptable, no matter the reason behind it, and confirmed Burton was no longer working there as a manager. The restaurant's general manager backed that up when asked by reporters. Even so, the video alone doesn't explain everything about why the employee was tied up in the first place; that's part of what investigators are trying to sort out now.
Franchise leadership at Wendy's of Bowling Green, which runs the Murfreesboro location, said employee safety is something they take seriously and called Burton's actions a clear violation of company standards. They said they looked into the situation once they found out about it and took action right away. That action was firing Burton from her management position. The company hasn't offered much more detail beyond that.
Police Reopen the Case
The case didn't stay closed for long. The employee's family pushed for police to take another look, and by Sept. 12, investigators had reopened it. Officers went back and interviewed Murphy along with the area manager who spoke at that staff meeting.
A source close to the investigation says police also reached out to the employee who was tied up, hoping to talk with him again now that more people are involved and more questions have come up.
So far, nothing in the reporting suggests Burton has been criminally charged, but that could change depending on what the renewed investigation turns up.
