Awkward find at thrift store goes viral
A personalized star chart discovered in a Savers thrift store has gone viral on Reddit, after the framed artwork—with the text “the night that you became mine”—was shared by a user who speculated it once marked a marriage proposal that ended in a breakup.
The Reddit user, who goes by u/foolishanomaly, posted the image to r/ThriftStoreHauls on October 31, writing: “Found at my local Savers. I cringed that it ended up at a thrift store … I crossed out the location to not dox myself but it’s the location, date, and time of the night sky at what I’m assuming is a proposal and subsequent break up.”
The post has received more than 1,500 upvotes, prompting a wave of speculation and commentary. Viewers were quick to note the emotional weight of the object—a custom-printed map of the stars designed to mark a significant moment in a couple’s life, with the time and coordinates carefully blurred out before it was shared to the platform.
The sparse image, paired with its bittersweet inscription, offered just enough context to suggest a story once deeply personal and now quietly discarded.
“I’ve seen them as anniversary gifts with the night you became mine being the wedding,” one viewer said. “Either way it’s a breakup.”
“I had one of these from a past relationship,” another added. “I reused the frame and burnt the star map.”
Several viewers shared different theories that point toward the mystery couple still being together, just not in need of the framed print.
“Could have just decided it was ugly even if the sentiment is nice,” one viewer said.
“I have 3 of these,” another added. “The company messed up my first order and then sent me two more as replacement. I really have no use for 3 of them and would maybe donate the extras for the frames if I didn’t want them. It’s a stretch but maybe that’s what happened here?”
“My husband bought me something similar for our first anniversary and I’ve always hated it,” one commenter shared, while another added: “I’ve never told him this because I don’t want to hurt his feelings but if you ever see it in a thrift store it’s because I finally accidentally donated it.”
The design of the piece—with a printed star field aligned to a specific date, time, and location—is commonly used for proposals, weddings or anniversaries. Without names or identifying marks, though, the object’s exact significance remains unknown.
Still, the post’s creator shared that they could find a way to incorporate the piece in their own home.
“Maybe I’ll go back and get it now,” they said in the comments.
