Sean McVay ‘wants to kick the snot’ out of Bears for friend LaFleur: Report

Sean McVay and Ben Johnson are two of the most fiery head coaches in the NFL.

They’re both considered offensive geniuses who have transformed the franchises they joined.

McVay is closing in on a decade with the Los Angeles Rams, whom he turned into a consistent Super Bowl contender, making two during his tenure and winning his last trip there in 2022 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Johnson is in his first year with the Chicago Bears, and the fans there hope he can do for the Bears what McVay did for the once-shambolic Rams. He took a team that was at the bottom of the NFC North and took them all the way to the top in his first year, infusing the city with energy and belief that it hadn’t seen in decades.

After beating archrival Green Bay in the opening round of the postseason, Johnson fired off a series of expletives, putting down the Packers. When asked a day later if he wanted to apologize or change his words now that the adrenaline was gone, he doubled down and said the Bears’ ownership was behind him.

While on the surface it seems like a story done and buried until next year, it isn’t.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur’s younger brother, Mike, is the Rams’ offensive coordinator. And not only that, Matt is best friends with McVay, the two having carried that friendship since the Packers coach was part of the Rams’ staff in 2017.

NFL analyst and personality Peter Schrager spoke about this with Bill Simmons on his podcast, and the bad blood between Johnson and the McVay ‘tree’ of coaches. Schrager also happens to be someone close to McVay, adding even more fire to this ongoing feud of NFL geniuses.

“This is the WWE part of this,” Schrager told Simmons. “I think McVay wants to kick the snot out of Ben Johnson. And I think Ben Johnson, who’s beaten McVay the last two times when Detroit played the Rams, has no problem with that. I’ll beat the snot out of you.”

This rivalry goes back two years, when Matthew Stafford made his return to Detroit in the postseason, and Lions fans booed him from beginning to end. Johnson, the offensive coordinator for the Lions, called a great game and outlasted Stafford and McVay in the dying seconds.
